Iceberg lettuce Glassica: chosen by the best!

In the spring and summer season of 2019, the PrimaVega Vegetable Producers Group chose the Glassica variety as the best iceberg lettuce.

Why did PrimaVega choose Glassica Iceberg Lettuce?
“We chose Glassica because it is a very stable variety, we can use it both for commercial and processing purposes. It is characterized by the fact that from the beginning of planting, i.e. from April to August, it maintains the same level of quality, it is very stable when it comes to tipburn and knocking out flower shoots. ” – says Paweł Różycki, who is responsible for harvesting vegetables within the group’s structures. Małgorzata Zadura, Product Manager at Hazera Poland confirms that Glassica is very stable. Cultivated in various conditions, also in summer at high temperatures, it gives a high marketable yield, does not knock out the inflorescence shoots and is less sensitive to leaf margins drying (tipburn).
The PrimaVega Vegetable Producers Group is one of the largest vegetable producers in Europe. They farm on the area of approx. 1000 ha, of which 300 ha are allocated to the cultivation of iceberg lettuce. In 2019, the Glassica variety occupied 15 to 20% of the cultivated area.

PrimaVega produces vegetables for virtually all European markets, but not only. Among the recipients, they are perceived as one of the largest players on the vegetable market, as well as a reliable and offering the highest quality producer. Production at PrimaVega is strictly controlled and the company has all possible certificates. In addition to iceberg lettuce, they grow celery, leek, the so-called special lettuces and arugula. Cereals are a secondary production. In high season, they are capable of collecting 180,000 heads in one day. They produce both for the fresh market and for industry.

Iceberg Glassica is very stable. Cultivated in various conditions, also in summer at high temperatures, it gives a high marketable yield, does not knock out the inflorescence shoots and is less sensitive to leaf margins drying (tipburn). Moreover, it is fully resistant to downy mildew and aphid. These features make it cultivated all over Poland and abroad. It has gained popularity in, among others, Great Britain, the Netherlands and France. Glassica is also known as a variety that is easy to prepare for sale: the shape of the head allows it to be cut and packaged easily, the top leaf does not curl and the bottom of the head is well closed. Trade heads weighing from 500 to 700 g, after wrapping in foil, go to the fresh market.
